The consumption of tomato-based products has increased by around 4% between 2018 and 2019 compared to the average level of the previous three years and an 8% difference compared to the preceding year. This trend has been linked to the increasing interest in the health benefits of tomatoes. A revision of the Tomato Suspension Agreement between the US, the largest importer of tomatoes in the world, and Mexico, the largest exporter of tomatoes in the world, was made in September 2019, rendering investigations of main import varieties at the border mandatory. Little progress has been made in the first three rounds of establishing an EU-UK trade deal following Brexit. This report addresses an overview of the global tomato landscape, including production, consumption, imports, and exports. Emphasis is on key global players including Mexico, Spain, Germany, and the US.
