52% drop in olive oil production in Catalonia, Spain

The Olive Oil Commission of the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Catalonia (FCAC), which represents the sector as a whole, meeting with the senior officials of the Ministry of Climate Action, has called for urgent measures to deal with the drastic drop in the production of oil, a situation that affects a hundred cooperatives that produce 73% of Catalan olive oil. According to definitive data from the cooperatives, this year's harvest will drop to 15,000 tons -52% less than an average campaign- and will mean a loss of 55 million euros in the sector. These figures would be lower than the forecast for September 2022 before the start of the harvest - when a drop to 19,000 tons was forecast - and they are even below the forecast of 16,000 tons at the end of January, when the harvest was in the final stretch.
