Overall, drought is more intense and widespread in The Sunflower State this week, according to Thursday’s U.S. Drought Monitor. D4 exceptional drought expanded in southwest Kansas over the last week, growing to impact more than 12% of the state. D3 extreme drought conditions retreated less than 1% and persist across more than 30% of the state. D2 severe drought acreage surged to cover more than 21% of the state. More than 11% of Kansas is suffering from D1 moderate drought. At 21%, abnormally dry conditions dominate the northeast corner of the state. Portions of 11 counties in northeast Kansas are the only areas reporting no moisture stress. August 2022 was the seventh driest August on record for the state.
