Spain: Agro-food cooperatives estimate a cereal harvest in Extremadura that falls by half

Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias Extremadura has made a first estimate of the production and area of this cereal crop in the region, which represents a reduction of 55.7% compared to last year's campaign. Specifically, a cereal harvest of 336,805 tons is forecast compared to the 760,402 tons of cereals produced in the previous season. In terms of area, this year 210,110 hectares are allocated to cereals in Extremadura. The drop in production due to the drought suffered highlights the need to seek new techniques and solutions that improve crop yields and face the challenges of climate change. Research, genetic improvement and new varieties are the keys that the sector has to improve its yields, as well as adequate water management policies that guarantee sustainable access to adequate water resources for agriculture.
