Brazil: Producers lose 50% of onion production in São José do Norte

Updated Sep 19, 2023
Rainfall volumes increased significantly in the south of the country as a result of El Niño. According to a survey by the Hortifruti/Cepea team, in the case of onions, the region of São José do Norte (RS) was the one that presented the most significant negative results to date, with around 400 mm of rain in the first half of September alone, and some producers even had losses of 50% of their crops. São José do Norte comes from a harvest of excellent results in 2022/23, both in productivity and profitability. For the 2023/24 season, expectations, which were already below previous results, were reduced even further, with the possibility of 20% lower production, in addition to low quality.
