Italy: Chestnuts in Piedmont, a decline in production due to weather but good quality

The 2021 chestnut campaign was affected by the drought and frosts of early April, but the quality remains good. This is what Coldiretti Piemonte affirms with respect to taking stock of the latest harvest in a region that currently sees 12 thousand hectares of fruit chestnut groves, for a production of around 140 thousand quintals and a turnover of nearly 20 million euros. “Once again - explains Roberto Moncalvo, confederal delegate of Coldiretti Cuneo - there are clear signs of climate change. This time the production of chestnuts is affected which, due to the drought and the late frost of early April, has registered a sharp decline throughout our region, while the quality remains good, despite the slightly smaller size.
