China: Tuna imports hit new low in August this year, while exports increase significantly

A total of 990.48 tons of tuna worth 34.3372 million yuan were imported in August. Compared with 571.77 tons and 40.6242 million yuan in the same period last year, the import volume increased by 73.23%, and the import value decreased by 15.48%. Based on detailed monthly import data this year, imports have declined significantly. The volume of imports is the lowest since February this year, and the value of imports has reached a new low this year.
Compared to July, these data decreased by -84.97% and -73.98% month-on-month. Contrary to the import data, exports rose significantly in August, with export volume increasing 11.49% year-on-year to 17,819.77 tons and export value increasing 24.16% year-on-year to 776 million yuan. Compared to the previous month, they also increased by 30.11% and 26.84%, respectively. In the first eight months of this year, China imported a total of 27,837.38 tons of tuna worth 702 million yuan, up 770% and 172% respectively year-on-year. Due to various factors such as fishing moratorium, seasonal demand and market prices, tuna import data fluctuates widely. The total tuna export volume from January to August was 109.3 thousand tons, down 20.36% from last year; total exports amounted to 4.47 billion, decreasing by 16.92% compared to the same period last year.
