Chinese buyers are believed to have booked several large ships of French barley this month, adding to a French export program as traders shipped a previous round of sales from late last year, European traders say. China has become an important export market for French barley in recent years. As one of the few European barley origins approved for import by Beijing, France attracted extra demand during a trade dispute between China and Australia. In recent deals, Chinese importers have bought five to six Panamax cargoes of around 60,000t each for shipment in the coming months, three traders say. There were also rumors in the market that the volume may have reached 10-15 ships, or even 900,000 tons. The last sales are believed to have been in the last three weeks and were for the 2022 vintage to be shipped in the first half of 2023, mainly between January and March/April, traders say.
