The European Commission has put forward proposals to revamp the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) rules in order to streamline regulations for farmers and enhance their competitiveness. The proposed changes, aimed at benefiting small farmers and adopting more technological approaches, include raising the annual single payment threshold from €1,250 to €2,500, exempting small farmers from certain environmental regulations, and offering payments for environmentally friendly farming practices. The plan also focuses on simplifying environmental controls, supporting farmers affected by natural disasters or animal diseases, allowing for more flexibility in national administrations' CAP Strategic Plans, and encouraging the digitalisation of farming systems. Additionally, the commission intends to present a comprehensive legislative simplification package for other policies impacting farmers and agri-food businesses later in the year.
