Farmers in crisis: every second one would give up

The future of British agriculture is viewed with gloom by those involved – half of the farmers have already considered permanently exiting the agricultural sector. According to the Farmdex Report 2025, the uncertain economic situation, political unpredictability, and mental burdens have created an unprecedented crisis in the United Kingdom's agriculture. McCain Foods' representative survey conducted in the summer interviewed 200 British farmers, and the results are disheartening. 51 percent of respondents seriously considered stopping production at least once in the past year. Forty percent fear that they will likely have to take this step in the next decade because they cannot sustain their farm under the current economic conditions. The "Farmdex Optimism Index" stands at 38 percent, reflecting the general lack of optimism. Only 12 percent expressed optimism about the sector's future, while 74 percent were decidedly pessimistic.
