From July 31, 2024, to August 6, 2024, the National Reference Laboratory for Small Ruminant Plague confirmed the presence of the virus in 21 farms with sheep and goats across various municipalities in Greece. This has led to the slaughter of 16,000 sheep and goats due to zoonoses. The Greek Minister of Rural Development and Food, Kostas Tsiaras, has reached out to the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Fisheries, Janus Vojčeschofki, and the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakidou, seeking support for affected farmers and emphasizing the need for solidarity and coordinated efforts to combat the financial implications of the small ruminant plague (PPR) in the EU.
