The consequences of the flood in Emilia Romagna and the sudden changes in temperature are causing a significant drop in the supply of fruit and vegetables with consequences on consumers' wallets and eating habits. The observatory of the Rome agro-food center, one of the largest European structures for the marketing of the agri-food sector, reveals that early Italian cherries and apricots are already scarce today in wholesale markets, due to the rains and low temperatures in May, as well as peaches and nectarines. Following the flood in Emilia Romagna there will also be less availability on the markets of some fully summer and autumn products (late varieties of peaches, nectarines but also persimmons). For newly produced Emilian apples and pears, in addition to the flood, even the late spring frosts will have an impact on the offer of the new crop. A lack of availability which - according to the CAR - will lead to a 15% increase in prices in the coming weeks compared to May 2022. ...
