Corn areas in France are at their lowest in 30 years

The areas cultivated with grain maize are estimated at 1.3 million hectares in France in 2023, or 100,000 hectares less than the previous year, the lowest for 30 years, according to initial estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture. Water-hungry at the worst time - summer -, corn has been falling sharply for two years in France, in particular in favor of sunflower, which requires less fertilizer and is more resistant in the context of climate change. Except in Brittany, where the areas of corn would be up slightly, the decline is general. It is particularly marked in the Pays de la Loire (-17%) and in Occitania (-11%).
