Since the second half of February, yellow onions on the Moldovan wholesale market have risen in price at a rate of plus 1 lei/kg per week, i.e. plus 6-8% to the average price of the previous week. Last week, wholesale onions cost an average of 17 lei/kg ($0.91/kg). This is probably the highest price - both in national currency and in dollars / euros - in the entire history of the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, according to the EastFruit monitoring data, last week the onion price range expanded compared to the previous one. For the highest quality goods, sellers asked for 18 lei/kg ($0.97/kg), while the minimum price level for regular quality onions stabilized at 16 lei/kg ($0.86/kg). The bulk of transactions were concluded at this price. Given this circumstance, some operators of the local fruit and vegetable market assume that the potential for growth in prices for onions within Moldova has been exhausted - consumer buyers are not ready to pay more.
