Tridge summary

Although rice is the third most planted cereal and the one with the highest human consumption in the world, in Argentina it does not occupy the same place of importance, since contrary to what happens in Asia, 30% is destined for internal consumption and 70% for export. The production at the national level is developed under extensive crops in the coastal provinces, where the types of heavy soils and the availability of water facilitate the development of the plant. For 30 years, the Rice Genetic Improvement Program of INTA Concepción del Uruguay -Entre Ríos- has been working to obtain new varieties of rice in conjunction with the Proarroz Foundation and National Universities. At the initiative of the agronomist Julio Hirschorn, from the National University of La Plata, intense activity was developed in the improvement that continued until the '90s, under the direction of Juan Marassi from Entre Ríos. "Rice is the most studied species not only for its importance in Asia but also because it is a diploid plant with a small and simple genome, in fact, it was the first cultivated species of which the complete genome sequence was described, which was published in 2001 ", explained José Colazo, researcher and member of the Rice Genetic Improvement group at INTA Concepción del Uruguay.
