A severe outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza has been reported at a commercial poultry farm in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state, marking the first detection of such an event in the country's commercial poultry system. The outbreak has led to the death of 7,389 chickens out of a total of 17,025 that fell ill. The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) has implemented measures, including quarantine and restrictions on the movement of birds and products, in collaboration with the WHO and other international organizations. Despite the outbreak, MAPA assures that poultry and egg products from Brazil are safe to consume and that the incident does not affect trade. The border regions, including Argentina, have been put on high alert. China and Argentina have previously halted poultry imports from Brazil due to avian flu outbreaks.
