The November consumer prices (excluding fresh food) announced by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on the 22nd rose 3.1% compared to the same period last year. This is the same figure as the previous month, July (3.1%). Japan's inflation rate, which had soared to 4.2% in January of this year, fell to 3.1% to 3.4% with the implementation of the government's electricity and gas subsidy policy, but is still at a high level in the 3% range. The price of food that ordinary people eat every day is rising strongly. Groceries excluding fresh food rose 9.2% over the past year. Groceries have risen more than 9% for five consecutive months. Eggs (35.2%), soda (16.7%), hamburgers (13.4%), and ice cream (12.7%) rose by more than two places. Prices of gasoline (7.5%), communication fees (10.2%), and accommodation fees (18.1%) also jumped. Electricity and gas rates, where the government is implementing price suppression policies such as providing subsidies, fell by 20.9% and 13.9%, respectively. The Japanese government plans to extend the electricity and gas bill subsidy support policy that was scheduled to end this fall. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported, “High prices continue, but personal consumption is weakening as wage increases cannot keep up.” Tokyo/Kim So-yeon Correspondent dandy@hani.co.kr
