Jeju Island recently announced that the total allowable catch (TAC) from July this year to June next year was set at 1879 tons to protect conch resources and distributed to six districts. Of the total 1879 tons, 1825 tons were distributed to Jeju City, Seogwipo, Hallim, Chuja, Seongsan, and Mosulpo Suhyup, while the remaining 54 tons were reserved. In addition, 30% (564 tons) of all 1879 tons of TAC was allocated for domestic use to promote consumption of conch and expand domestic demand. Since the mid-1980s, Jeju Island has been implementing the TAC system in 1991 to manage conch resources as conch resources have rapidly decreased. The TAC is established based on the Biological Allowable Catch (ABC) of conch resources of the Jeju Institute of Oceans and Fisheries. An official from Jeju-do said, “We are reducing the dependence on exports to Japan by expanding domestic consumption through the development of military supply and processed foods for Sora in Jeju.”
