In January-July, Kazakhstan increased rice imports by 3.5 times due to a reduction in its own cultivated areas due to an acute shortage of irrigation water. The press service of the Bureau of National Statistics of Kazakhstan provided data on the increase in imports on Thursday.
“Against the background of a decrease in [rice] production, imports during this period increased 3.5 times, from 5.5 thousand to 19.1 thousand tons. At the same time, the share of imports amounted to 15%,” the report says. According to the department, in January - July, Kazakhstan produced 107.8 thousand tons of rice - 15.3% less compared to the same period in 2022. A reduction in the area under rice and other water-intensive crops in Kazakhstan has been noted since 2022.
