Lower potato yields are expected in north-western Europe

According to the NEPG, producers in the four countries have reduced their potato-growing area by 4.6 per cent year-on-year to a total of 497,991 hectares. Compared to 2020, however, average yields are likely to increase by 1.3 percent. In detail, experts estimate this year's consumer potato harvest in Germany at 8.33 million tonnes; that would be 2.6 percent less than in 2020. In France, production is expected to fall by 3.2 per cent to 6.69 million tonnes. Volume in the Netherlands is likely to fall by 12.1 per cent to 3.25 million tonnes. In contrast, Belgian potato growers have increased production by an estimated 2.2 per cent to 4.43 million tonnes for yield-dependent reasons. According to the NEPG, in the non-contractual consumer potato market, prices are currently supported by producers' reluctance to sell.
