To date, however, Michoacán has been the only Mexican state with permission to export avocados to the United States. As a result, Jalisco producers and exporters have focused on other export markets in recent years. Jalisco's avocado sector now exports more than 113,000 tons of avocados annually to 30 different countries, including Canada, Japan, Spain and the Netherlands. The US announced last year that producers from Jalisco would also gain access to the US market, and has since completed the inspection and certification of more than 8,000 hectares of avocado orchards in Jalisco. After waiting about 10 years, the producers can now supply avocados to the North American market, just like growers from Michoacán.
