On February 19, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) confirmed avian influenza in a turkey fattening farm in Garrel (Cloppenburg district). The stock of more than 13,000 turkeys has already been killed and a corresponding exclusion and protection zone has been set up. It is the seventh company in the Cloppenburg district that has been affected since November. A total of around 100,000 animals have been killed so far - more than 390,000 animals throughout Lower Saxony since November. According to the animal disease information system, another turkey farm in Garrel with 9,600 animals was only affected on February 16th and before that on February 11th a broiler farm in Emsland with around 90,000 animals. According to the FLI, since the start of the current wave of avian influenza in October 2021, there have been a total of 72 outbreaks in poultry farms in Germany, with 26 being the majority in Lower Saxony. Avian influenza is still a problem in Europe. However, producers in France had to cope with even more outbreaks in poultry flocks.
