The dual-purpose awnless wheat varieties from LongReach Plant Breeders have been bred to produce milling-grade grain, but if hit by damaging environmental factors they have the capacity to produce high quality hay. LPB Bale is a slow-maturing variety with Australian Premium White (APW) classification for South Australia and Victoria, while LPB Dual is a mid-to-low-maturing variety with Australian Hard (AH) classification for the same States, with classification currently being sought for WA in 2022. LongReach wheat breeder western region Scott Sydenham said Bale would have more of a fit on the south coast, however it was only in its first year of WA trials, so the data was speculative at this stage. "We know far more about Dual and that is going to have far more of a fit in the eastern Wheatbelt, giving growers an option of a long coleoptile and an awnless wheat for frost avoidance strategies," Dr Sydenham said.
