Since the situation of the cod and herring stocks in the western Baltic Sea, which are important for Germany, remains critical, targeted fishing has to remain largely closed, as it was in the current year. At least for western herring, however, there are medium-term prospects for recovery. The reason for this is that last year Germany successfully campaigned for a drastic reduction in catches from this stock in the neighboring Skagerrak/Kattegat. The cod stock is suffering from a variety of negative environmental influences and the consequences of the climate crisis. According to scientific assessment, it is currently unclear whether and when it will return to a healthy population size.
