(Yeongam=Yonhap News) Reporter Jo Geun-young = Yeongam County in South Jeolla Province announced on the 19th that the nation's first organic triticale seeds were harvested in the fields of Sadeung Village in Haksan-myeon.
Triticale is a crop created by crossbreeding wheat and rye, which grows well in cold conditions and takes deep roots, effectively restoring soil fertility.
When left unharvested and plowed back into the ground, it functions as a plant-based eco-friendly green manure, improving soil health.
The triticale, harvested through collaboration between Yeongam farmers and the Rural Development Administration, was grown on a 1,650㎡ demonstration plot in Haksan-myeon, with the Agricultural Science Institute monitoring the entire process and verifying growth conditions and cultivation techniques.
Total harvest volume is approximately 700kg.
Some of the harvested seeds will be provided to the Agricultural Science Institute for research, while the remainder will be sold to farmers as eco-friendly agricultural materials through the cooperative 'Hansalim'.
Kim Jun-du, Director of Agricultural Policy at Yeongam County, explained that "this triticale harvest is a result of farmers' eco-friendly practices and cooperation with public institutions."
