Pesticide residues exceeding the regulatory limit have been found in cucumbers imported from Morocco, leading to their destruction at the Portuguese border. According to sources from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), the Portuguese authorities have reported the presence of these contaminated cucumbers, we learn from Hortoinfo. According to RASFF notification 2023.2642, Moroccan cucumbers contained remains of the pesticide Oxamyl at a proportion beyond their maximum residue limit (MRL) established at 0.01 mg/kg – ppm, which is the minimum detectable in laboratory. The Portuguese authorities therefore proceeded to destroy them in order to prevent their distribution on European Union (EU) markets. Oxamyl helps control soil and plant foliage pests.
