Spain: Poultry insurance covers about 10% of the birds raised in a year

The contracting of insurance for avian livestock grew by 18% in 2021 in Spain to cover 75.26 million animals, which represents around 10% of the around 800 million farm birds that are raised throughout of one year and all of them have coverage for avian flu included as a base. Since the beginning of 2022, Spain has been facing a wave of avian flu outbreaks that has already led to the slaughter of 320,000 farm birds, although it is still early to have the first data on compensation, as sources from the Spanish Association of Combined Agricultural Insurance Insurers (Agroseguro) have indicated to Efeagro.
