The 2022 crop is 19% less than the record 33 million tons in 2021, but is comparable to the 27.9 million tons average over the past five years. The analysis was conducted by the Institute for War Research and the American Enterprise Institute's Critical Threat Project. According to satellite maps, as of August, the eastern regions, which in September decided to join Russia, accounted for 22% of the wheat crop.
