Drought in the Maghreb region (North Africa) has significantly worsened the prospects for grain production, leading to higher food prices, increased dependence on their imports and heightened risks of political and economic instability, according to Grain Central. Thus, the countries of the region, which includes Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, this year faced the worst drought since the beginning of the century. In particular, in Morocco, a severe drought accelerated the maturation of wheat and barley crops, which significantly reduced their yields. MARS analysts estimate the wheat harvest in the country at 3.6 million tons, which, although 34% higher than the previous year, when there was also a drought, is 25% lower than the average for the last 5 years (4.83 million tons) with a yield 1.48 t/ha (-10% on average).
