South Korea has reported its first case of foot-and-mouth disease in nearly two years on a cattle farm in the southwestern province of Jeollanam-do, prompting the culling of about 180 head of cattle and increased disinfection efforts. The outbreak, the first since May 2023, has led to the government raising its alert level in response. The disease causes fever and blisters in the mouth of cloven-hoofed ruminants such as cattle, pigs, sheep and goats.
