Sales of nuts from the United States to EU members reached a value of 3.1 billion in 2019, compared to 2.800 the previous year. According to a report by the Department of Agriculture of this country (USDA), of that amount, 1,800 million corresponded to almonds with and without shell, 609 million to pistachios and 328 million to walnuts. The main destinations for these three products were Spain, Germany and the Netherlands, which accounted for 64% of total Community purchases. For example, in the case of almonds our country is the main buyer among the members of the EU. During the last years the community demand has not stopped growing due to the consideration of nuts as healthy products and also as a source of protein in vegetarian diets; they are also a staple ingredient in many traditional sweets.
