The European Commission evaluates the Spanish system for controlling the prudent use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine

The Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety of the European Union conducted an audit in Spain from March 6 to 17, focusing on the control of veterinary antimicrobial use. The objective was to verify whether antibiotics are used in compliance with their market authorization and if the supervisory mechanisms of the authorities are effective. The European Commission evaluated the Spanish system, positively valuing its usefulness in promoting the prudent use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine and thus contributing to the fight against antimicrobial resistance, a major challenge for animal and human health. The report underlines that both the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the autonomous communities carry out appropriate controls on veterinarians and animal producers, in accordance with the European Regulation on Veterinary Medicines.
