The Peruvian Amazon Research Institute (IIAP) has initiated in 2025 the process of recovering 60 hectares of degraded soils in Madre de Dios, as part of an ambitious plan that seeks to return life to ecosystems devastated by gold mining and build sustainable economic alternatives for local communities. This surface represents 25% of the 250 hectares contemplated in the first intervention phase. The project, with a duration of one year, has as its main objective the comprehensive recovery of the natural environment affected by gold mining and the reactivation of family and community economies, through the generation of sustainable productive opportunities that do not depend on extractive activities. So far, around 100 families from communities such as Sol Naciente, Alto Libertad, El Pilar, San Jacinto, and Villa Santiago are already benefiting from modules of fish farming, technified horticulture, minor poultry breeding, and bio-fertilizer production.
