The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) has been awarded a $5 million grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) to combat laurel wilt disease and ambrosia beetles, which are threatening avocado production in Florida. This disease has already resulted in the loss of over 350,000 avocado trees. The research will focus on improving control and mitigation practices, testing new avocado varieties for cold and disease tolerance, and expanding the industry beyond Miami-Dade County. The interdisciplinary team of 12 scientists will work over the next five years to sustain and expand the avocado industry using innovative pest management, plant breeding, modeling, and genetic solutions.
