Ukrainian grain exports fall by almost 18%

Ukraine's grain exports for the 2022-23 season fell by nearly 18% to 36.9 million tonnes on March 27, due to a smaller harvest and continued difficulties caused by the invasion of Russia, Reuters reported, citing data from the Ministry of Agriculture. During the same period last year, Ukraine had exported 44.8 million tons of grain. Exports so far in the July-June season include 12.6 million tonnes of wheat, 21.7 million tonnes of corn and 2.27 million tonnes of barley. After a nearly six-month blockade caused by Russia's invasion on February 24, 2022, three Ukrainian Black Sea ports have managed to restart shipments under an agreement brokered by the United Nations and Turkey. The Black Sea Grain Initiative was recently extended by 60 days to 18 May. Ukraine is a major grain producer and exporter, with production expected at 53 million tonnes in 2022, down from a record 86 million tonnes in 2021.
