The State plans to carry out a “preventive depopulation” of French poultry. 1.3 million animals are concerned, mainly ducks, to prevent the ever-increasing spread of avian flu. Ducks, hens and turkeys are targeted by preventive slaughter. If the government confirms its desire to euthanize 1.3 million additional animals, this will bring the total of animals slaughtered since the start of this epidemic period to 2.5 million at the end of November 2021. This acceleration of decisions is due to the sudden progression of the flu avian since the beginning of January, in the South-West. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, as of January 19, 2022, France has 231 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in livestock, 22 cases in wildlife and 5 cases in backyards.
