US approves systems approach for Chilean plums

US authorities authorized the entry of Chilean plums under the Systems Approach, greatly improving market access for one of the largest fresh fruit exports from the Latin American country. According to the notice in the Federal Register based on the findings of a commodity import assessment document, USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has determined that, in addition to the existing option of irradiation, plums from Chile can be safely imported under a systems approach to the US from January 25. “The decision to allow the Systems Approach for Chilean plums is a victory for all, said Ronald Bown, president of the Chilean Fruit Exporters Association (ASOEX).
