USA: Cattle market review for week 39 from October 2, 2023

Commitment of Traders data showed live cattle traders had a net contract length of 101,860 as of September 26. This is 1141 contracts weaker for the week. Wholesale beef prices fell Friday afternoon, with Choice falling 73 cents and Select falling $1.40. The Chc/Sel spread was $24.74. Federally controlled cattle slaughter for the week was estimated at 612,000 head through Saturday.
This is a reduction of 13 thousand heads per week and 55 thousand less than in the same week last year. Cold storage meat inventory statistics for August were released by the US Department of Agriculture (NASS) last week. Total red meat inventories were 920.5 million pounds, down 15.4% from last year. Cold storage beef inventories totaled 421.6 million pounds, down 17.9% from last year. Compared to a year earlier, boneless beef and beef cuts inventories fell 17.1% and 25.2%, respectively, to 383.2 million and 38.4 million pounds.
