The rain in northern and northeastern Europe contrasted sharply with the extreme heat and drought in the western and southern farming areas of the old continent. Moderate to heavy rains (10-25 mm, locally more) over Scandinavia as well as the central and northern parts of England and Germany have improved soil moisture for summer (mid-year) crop filling as well as for winter sowing (end of year). Meanwhile, a wide range of moderate to heavy rainfall (10-95 mm) in northeastern Europe has improved breeding prospects for filling summer crops and increased moisture reserves for winter rapeseed planting (seeds used primarily for oil production). On the other hand, heat and drought continue to hamper the filling of corn, sunflowers and soybeans in Spain, France, Italy, Hungary and the Danube River valley.
