Description
The average production yield of mace is 10 to 15 metric tons per year. The spice is cultivated in Srilanka where the main harvest season is between June and August. Propagation and nursery techniques are used for cultivation of the spice. It thrives well in warm humid conditions in locations with an annual rainfall of 150cm and more. Areas with soils of clay loam, sandy loam and red lateritic are ideal for its growth. The ripe or mature fruit splits open at the groove while still on the tree and the seed surrounded by the red aril falls to the ground after two days. Harvesting involves collecting the seed or seed with aril from the ground. Sometimes fruits with partially opened pods may be picked from the tree using a long pole "rodding".
The seed with the surrounding red aril is removed from the pod which oftentimes is discarded. The collected seeds and seeds with mace are transported from the field by workers, on their heads or assisted by an animal (donkey) to the farmer's residence. The mace is carefully separated from the seed, graded and allowed to dry directly in the sun. It is ensured that the drying mace does not get wet.
