W1: Weekly Nut Update

Tridge's global market analysts and country representatives take a deep dive into what happened during W1 in the global nut landscape including cashew, hazelnut, and macadamia. In summary, the Tanzanian cashew auctions have reached the 11th week since the start of the 2022/23 season with over 165K MT in sales. A 42% WoW drop was observed in the Tanzania raw cashew nut auction volume for the premium regions of Tandahimba, Newala, and Masasi. In addition, farmers agreed to sell 954MT of first-grade raw cashew nuts at an auction and the 9th cashew auction in the Coastal region of Tanzania was held on January 4, 2023. Farmers agreed to sell 258MT of cashew nuts to three buyers. In ensuring that the Tanzanian Government reaches the goal of increasing the annual production of raw cashews to 700K MT by the year 2025/26. The Government has decided to digitize and improve the database of farmers, which will help develop various plans for their development. On the other hand, in Turkey hazelnut exports decreased by 9.24% YoY in volume and 22.62% YoY in value in 2022. Lastly, Kenya, ranking third in global macadamia production, has increased production by almost 55% to 65K MT in 2022, up from 42K MT in 2021.

Cashew

Tanzania: 2022/23 Season Raw Cashew Nut Auction Progression in Tanzania (Jan 3)

As of W52, Tanzanian cashew auctions have reached the 11th week since the start of the 2022/23 season. Farmers obtained more than USD 128,76M after 165,000MT were sold. According to the Cashew Nut Board of Tanzania, most of the cashews in the 2022/23 season were not sold through the warehouse receipt system, as farmers stored their crops at homes after harvesting for processing. However, auctions are expected to continue because of the delayed cashew season.

Tanzania: Tanzanian Raw Cashew Nut Auction Volume Dropped 42% WoW in W51 (Jan 3)

A 42% WoW drop was observed in the Tanzanian raw cashew nut auction volume for the premium regions of Tandahimba, Newala, and Masasi from 4,262MT in W50 to 2,468MT in W51. The drop is due to Tanzania's 2022/23 raw cashew season's approaching an end. Prices for Tandahimba and Newala premium region nuts for W51 were low with the highest bid price at USD 0.78/kg, and the lowest bid offer at USD 0.73/kg.

Tanzania: Tanzanian Farmers Agreed to Auction off 954MT of Cashews at the TANECU Cooperative Union (Jan 3)

Tanzanian farmers agreed to sell 954MT of first grade raw cashew nuts at the auction on 30 December conducted by Tandahimba and Newala Cooperative Union. The highest bid price was USD 0.742/kg, and the lowest bid offer was USD 0.740/kg.

Tanzania: Last Cashew Auction in Coastal Region of Tanzania for the 2022/23 Season Held on January 4, 2023 (Jan 5)

The 9th cashew auction in the Coastal region of Tanzania, was held on January 4, 2023. Farmers agreed to sell 258MT of cashew nuts to three buyers with the following breakdown, 11MT grade one for USD 0.65/kg and 247MT of the second grade at USD 0.51/kg. This auction will be the last in the 2022/23 cashew season for CORECU Cooperative Union. The region sold a total of 10,683MT through the union warehouse receipts system. First grade products accounted for 96.5% of the total volume at 10,311MT, while the second grade accounted for 3.5% at 372MT.

Tanzania: Government to Establish a Digital Database of Cashew Farmers (Jan 6)

In ensuring that the Tanzanian government reaches the goal of increasing the annual production of raw cashews in the country to 700,000MT by the year 2025/26. The Government has decided to digitize and improve the database of farmers that will help develop various plans for their development, including the purchase and distribution of inputs, the distribution of seeds and quality cashew seedlings, packaging (sacks), extension services, screening, research, and markets. The exercise will take place in two phases with the first phase involving the regions of Mtwara, Lindi, Ruvuma, Pwani, and Tanga, while the second phase will be held in new regions.

Hazelnut

Turkey: Turkish Hazelnut Exports Amounted to USD 1.8B in 2022, a 9.24% YoY Decrease (Jan 5)

Exports decreased by 9.24% YoY in volume and 22.62% YoY in value in 2022. Additionally, in the first four months of the 2022/23 export season, which started on September 1, a total revenue of USD 742M was obtained from the sale of 130,606MT of hazelnuts.

Macadamia

Kenya: Macadamia Production Increased by 55% YoY in 2022 (Jan 3)

Kenya, ranking third in global macadamia production, has increased production by almost 55% to 65,000MT in 2022, up from 42,000MT in 2021. It is mainly attributed to the licensing of 35 new processors in the country, and as a result, farmers gained an excess of USD 32.52M.
