Rainfall in parts of Maharashtra has damaged white onion crops, increasing the price of this product in the market. While the market is flooded with red onions and potatoes, white onions are now entering the APMC market in Vashi, at around USD 0.11-0.13/kg (INR 10-12/kg) lower than in 2022. White onions are grown in limited quantities in regions such as Alibag, Vasai, Nagpur, and Nashik.

China

Demand for Chinese Onions Is Rising in Overseas Markets (Mar 17)

In China, onion exports have gradually returned to normal after the measures to prevent Covid-19 were lifted. The European market decreased yields in the previous quarter, and demand has risen sharply.

Turkey

High Air Temperatures Affected Onion Prices in Turkey (Mar 14)

Onion prices have increased almost 3-4 times in recent weeks. The increase in onions, whose shelf price is 25 TL, is due to the high air temperatures. The President of the Turkish Federation of Carriers reported after the September harvest, onions had to be kept in the cold in the winter season but came into contact with hot weather this year due to the air temperatures. Therefore, the onions became green again and brought additional costs.

Bangladesh

No New Import Permit for Onion Through Hili Land Port After 15 March (Mar 14)

In Bangladesh, importers suspect onion prices may increase during Ramadan as the government has decided not to issue new permits for importing Indian onions after 15 March through the Hili land port to ensure local farmers get a fair price.

Kazakhstan

The Issue of Lifting the Ban on the Export of Onions in Kazakhstan Is Not Considered (Mar 14)

The Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Trade and Integration of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported the government is not considering lifting the ban on onion exports, as onion reserves amount to 68K tons, and 40K tons are for March-April.

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan Gives the Go-Ahead for the Export of 20K Tons of Onions From Kazakhstan (Mar 17)

In Kazakhstan, the ban on the export of onions will be replaced by a quota. Previously, farmers asked to open exports because they could not sell the entire stock on the domestic market, and part of the onions would rot in warehouses. The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan published two draft orders. One will suspend the current ban on the export of onions, the other will introduce quantitative restrictions on exports until April 28, 2023. Quantitative restrictions (quotas) on the export of onion from the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan to third countries and the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union are planned in the number of 20K tons. The distribution of quotas for the export of onions will be automatic when issuing phytosanitary certificates in the unified automated system for managing the sectors of the agro-industrial complex.
