W47: Weekly Nut Report

Tridge's global market analysts and country representatives take a deep dive into what happened during W47 in the global nut landscape including almond, cashew, hazelnut, pistachio, and walnut. In summary, In the United States, the almond kernels market has stalled since October 2022, due to the loss of strength in the dollar. The Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC) reports that from January to July 2022, Cambodia exported around 660K tons of raw cashew nuts to Vietnam for a total of more than USD 1.077B, a YoY decrease of 34.65%, or about 350K tons. In Tanzania, farmers agreed to sell various MT of standard-grade raw cashew nuts in the auctions. In Vietnam, cashew exports fell sharply, and high inflation forced importers to change their business methods, no longer buying cashew kernel reserves in large quantities. For Hazelnuts, Turkey exported USD 1.3B worth in 10 months in 2022. Meanwhile, the quality of Turkish Gaziantep pistachios is unrivaled. However, exports dropped by 42-43%. On the other hand, due to the global oversupply of walnuts, in the United States, the price paid for Californian farmers decreased, the rising cost of farming and the lack of water irrigation have caused sources to pull orchards and leave over 500 acres fallow. Lastly, the Ukrainian Walnut Association and the Association of Almond and Walnut Producers of Georgia signed a memorandum of cooperation.

Almond

United States: Stalled Market for Almond Kernels Since October 2022 in the US (Nov 21)

The almond kernels market has stalled in the US since October 2022 due to the loss of strength of the dollar. The demand for the standard 5% grade has increased, while higher grades have low demand. Buyers tried to make the market consider releasing volume at lower prices due to the low demand. While peelers question if they will continue to process in-shell as the cost exceeds the price they received. In W46, prices are low at NPX USD 2-2.25/lb for calibrations 23/25, 27/30, and larger sizes.

Cashew

Cambodia: Half of Vietnam’s Cashews Exported to China in 2022 Originally Come From Cambodia (Nov 22)

The Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC) reports that from January to July 2022, Cambodia exported around 660K tons of raw cashew nuts to Vietnam for a total of more than USD 1.077B, a YoY decrease of 34.65%, or about 350K tons. The production and export of cashew nuts have dramatically decreased due to heavy rainfall and the increases in the price of freight and fertilizers. 90% of the cashews are exported from Cambodia to Vietnam as raw cashews, 2% of the cashews are exported to India, and the rest of 3% is processed in Cambodia due to the lack of processing plants that adhere to international standards. Raw cashews from Cambodia that are processed in Vietnam account for half of Vietnam's exports to China.

Tanzania: Tanzanian Farmers Agreed to Auction off 6,887MT of Cashews at the TAMCU Cooperative Union (Nov 21)

Tanzanian farmers agreed to sell 6,887MT of standard-grade raw cashew nuts at the auction conducted on November 18 by TANECU Cooperative Union, based in the Tandahimba and Newala districts. The highest bid price was USD 0.86/kg, and the lowest bid offer was USD 0.83/kg.

Tanzanian Farmers Agreed to Auction off 9,298MT of Cashews at the MAMCU Cooperative Union (Nov 21)

Tanzanian farmers agreed to sell 9,298MT of standard-grade raw cashew nuts at the auction conducted on November 18 by MAMCU Cooperative Union in Mtwara Municipal. The highest bid price was USD 0.86/kg, and the lowest bid offer was USD 0.80/kg.

Tanzanian Farmers Agreed to Auction off 1,710MT of Cashews at the LINDI MWAMBAO Cooperative Union (Nov 21)

Tanzanian farmers agreed to sell 1,710MT of standard-grade raw cashew nuts at the auction conducted on November 19 by LINDI MWAMBAO Cooperative Union in the Mtama district. The highest bid price was USD 0.79/kg (TZS 1842/kg), and the lowest bid offer was USD 0.79/kg (TZS 1835/kg).

Tanzania: Tanzanian Farmers Agreed to Auction off 5,031MT of Cashews at the RUNALI Cooperative Union (Nov 21)

Tanzanian farmers agreed to sell 5,031MT of standard-grade raw cashew nuts at the auction conducted on November 20 by RUNALI Cooperative Union in the Ruangwa District. The highest bid price was USD 0.85/kg, and the lowest bid offer was USD 0.84/kg.

Tanzania: Tanzanian Farmers Agreed to Auction off 1,155MT of Cashews at the CORECU Cooperative Union (Nov 24)

Tanzanian farmers agreed to sell 1,155MT of standard-grade raw cashew nuts at the auction conducted on November 23 by the Coastal Region Cooperative Union (CORECU) in the Mkuranga District. The highest bid price was USD 0.80/kg, and the lowest bid offer was USD 0.74/kg.

Tanzania: Tanzanian Farmers Agreed to Auction off 4,030MT of Cashews at the Tanecu Cooperative Union (Nov 25)

Tanzanian farmers agreed to sell 4,030 MT of standard-grade raw cashew nuts at the auction conducted on November 25 by TANECU, a cooperative union based in the Mtwara Region's Newala and Tandahimba districts. The highest bid price was USD 0.85/kg (TZs 1995), and the lowest bid offer was USD 0.83/kg (TZS 1930)

Vietnam: Export Effect of Cashew Nut Kernel in Vietnam (Nov 22)

Cashew exports fell sharply in Vietnam. High inflation forced importers to change their business methods, no longer buying cashew kernel reserves in large quantities. The output was difficult, making cashew kernel export enterprises face financial difficulties, lowering the selling price to attract customers, resulting in a sharp decrease in the quantity and value of cashew exports in the first 10 months of 2022.

Hazelnut

Turkey: Exported USD 1.3B Worth of Hazelnuts in 10 Months (Nov 24)

Turkey has exported USD 1.3B worth of hazelnuts in 10 months during 2022, according to the Farmer Registration System, 500K directly or indirectly from the hazelnuts produced in 13 provinces, namely Trabzon, Ordu, Giresun, Düzce, Sakarya, Zonguldak, Artvin, Bartın, Kocaeli, Sinop, Gümüşhane, Kastamonu, and Rize, on an area of approximately 725K ha. Ordu takes the lead in the ranking of the largest production area with approximately 230K ha of orchards. Hazelnut, which is at the forefront of its exports and productions, was exported to 129 countries, autonomous regions, and free zones, mainly Germany, Italy, and France, in the 10 months of this year.

Walnut

United States: Walnut Prices in California Decreased in W45 (Nov 21)

Due to a global oversupply of walnuts, the price paid to Californian farmers decreased in W45. The rising cost of farming and the lack of water irrigation has caused sources to pull orchards and leave over 500 acres fallow. In W45, the price paid to growers by processors for walnuts was USD 0.40/lb
