W52: Weekly Berry Update

Tridge's global market analysts and country representatives take a deep dive into what happened during W52 in the global blueberry and strawberry landscapes. In summary, blueberry farmers in Southern Morocco, have started the production of the blue manila variety. In Poland, the end of November brought a significant drop in blueberry prices. In Ukraine, during the year 2022, the blueberry harvest was 30-40% higher than the forecast with increasing demand. Taiwan has entered the strawberry season in W50. In Thailand, the selling price of imported Korean fresh strawberries decreased in W51. In Ukraine, the President of the Fruit and Vegetable Association (UPOA) reported that in 2022, Ukraine did not export or process a lot of strawberries, but the local market demand was satisfied.

Blueberry Prices in 2022 Drop in the Italian Large-Scale Distribution (Dec 28)

The prices of the large-scale distribution remained unchanged in W52 for raspberries and red currants; while blueberries dropped by 2.8%, blackberries achieved prices that increased by 2.2%. In the online retail brands surveyed, a variation of -5% was recorded in the number of references in the assortment, which passed to 39 compared to 41 in the previous survey of 12/20/2022.

Morocco

Farmers Seek to Extend the Early Blueberry Growing Season in Morocco (Dec 26)

Blueberry farmers in Southern Morocco, have started the production of the blue manila variety and have reached approximately 50% of the total production. The regions of Marruecos, Larache, and Kenitra will start production soon and will begin harvest in the first weeks of January. 

Poland

Prices for Imported Blueberries Have Risen Sharply in Poland (Dec 27)

The end of November brought a significant drop in prices for imported blueberries in Poland. The average for these berries dropped from USD 7.55/kg to USD 5.72/kg. As a result, in just a few days, the price of imported blueberries on the Polish market decreased by an average of 24% due to the rapid increase in the supply of berries imported from Peru.

Blueberry Is Becoming Popular and Will Continue to Fall in Price in Ukraine (Dec 28)

In 2022, the blueberry harvest in Ukraine was 30-40% higher than the forecast, with increasing demand. Traditionally, blueberries are grown in the north and west of Ukraine and sometimes in the Center, but they are not produced in the south and east.

Taiwan’s Strawberry Season Had Low Supply in W50 (Dec 29)

Taiwan has entered the strawberry season in W50, where the market can see locally grown, Japan and Korea-imported strawberries. Japan strawberries are known for their great packaging and special varieties. However, the recent supply of strawberries has been slowed down due to cold weather. Taiwan's locally grown ones have not yet entered peak season, and the market is seeing a slight shortage of strawberries.

Thailand

Drop In Korean Strawberry Prices in Thailand in W51 (Dec 27)

The selling price of imported Korean fresh strawberries at the end of W51 in the international fruits zone in Talad Thai market (The biggest agricultural, fishery, and livestock products market in ASEAN) decreased from about USD 40.42/box (THB 1.4k/box) (250gx8 punnets) or USD 40/box to USD 38.11-39.26/box (THB 1,320-1360/box). Also, Thai strawberries have been harvested, and the selling price stood at USD 6.29/kg. Its size and flavor are good, particularly the Hybrid 80 variant. 

Ukraine

In 2022, Garden Strawberries on the Ukrainian Market Were 40-45% More Expensive Than Last Year (Dec 26)

Given the low supply of fresh berries in Ukraine, the price of garden strawberries in 2022 was high. The President of the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association (UPOA) reported that in 2022, Ukraine did not export or process a lot of strawberries, but the local market demand was satisfied.
