W6: Weekly Nut Update

Tridge's global market analysts and country representatives take a deep dive into what happened during W6 in the global nut landscape of almonds, cashews, and walnuts. In summary, in November, Australia increased exports of almonds by 37%, with a volume of 9.3K tons of kernel and whole almonds. In Cambodia, the exports of raw cashew dropped by 34.65 % YoY. In Tanzania, the export value reached USD 12.0B in 2022, supported by cashews, tobacco, and cotton. Vietnam imported around 1.9M tons of cashew materials from many countries in 2022. On the other hand, in Georgia, a large volume of walnut imports was reported from November to January due to the rise in local demand. In Moldova, the wholesale price for in-shell walnuts began to decline in the first weeks of February. Lastly, in Russia, the Ministry of Natural Resources of Ingushetia plans to transfer 550 hectares of abandoned walnut orchards to farmers.

Almond

Australia: Overview of the Global Almond Market, the Second Half of 2022 (Feb 9)

In November, Australia increased the exports of almonds by 37%, with a volume of 9.3K tons of kernel and whole almonds, breaking a record since November 2012. The rapid growth is due to the increased demand for exports to China, which grew by 90% to almost USD 100M. China accounted for 83% of Australia's almond exports.

Cambodia: 98.5% Of Cambodia’s Cashew Exports Are Sold to Vietnam (Feb 10)

Cambodian raw cashew nuts are one of the main sources for the processing industry in Vietnam. The Vietnam Trade Office in Cambodia cited a report by the Cambodia Cashew Association, saying that in 2022 the country exported 670K tons of raw cashew nuts to the international market worth USD 1.07B in 2022, a decrease of 34.65 % YoY. Around 98.5% of Cambodia's cashew exports sold to Vietnam, equivalent to 660K tons, worth more than USD 1B.

Tanzania: Exports of Traditional Goods in Tanzania Increased 22% YoY in 2022 Supported by Cashew, Tobacco and Cotton (Feb 6)

The value of exports of goods and services in Tanzania increased to USD 12.0B during 2022, up from USD 9.87B in 2021. This increase was primarily driven by non-traditional exports, particularly manufactured goods, minerals and services receipts from tourism. Exports of traditional goods also increased from USD 627.9M in 2021 to USD 766.5M in 2022, supported by cashew nuts, tobacco, cotton and sisal. For cashew nuts and tobacco, the increase was due to increased volumes, whereas for cotton it was due to a rise in prices in the global market.

Vietnam: Vietnam Spends USD 1B to Import Cashew Nuts From Cambodia (Feb 8)

The Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas) reported that in 2022, Vietnam imported around 1.9M tons of cashew materials from many countries, with an average unit price of USD 1.4K/ton. Thus, cashew businesses have spent about USD 2.66B to import raw materials. According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, cashew nut export turnover during 2022, was estimated at USD 3.05B, with an output of 514.6K tons, a decrease of 12.6% in volume and 16% in value.

Walnut

Georgia: Georgia Buys Record High Amount of Walnuts Despite Recent Changes in Production (Feb 8)

In Georgia, a large volume of walnut imports was reported from November to January due to the rise in local demand. Georgia has heavily invested in walnut production since 2015. From 2015 to 2021, the total investment amounted to around USD 27M. The annual production, including orchards established before the state program, averaged 5.6K tons per year.

Moldova: Decrease in Prices for Nuts in Shell in Moldova Is for a Long Time (Feb 6)

In Moldova, the wholesale price for in-shell walnuts began to decline in the first weeks of February. In W7, the price decreased to USD 1.48/kg (lei 28/kg), an average of 7% drop. Many large nut growers and traders forecast that in February, the process of reducing wholesale prices for in-shell nuts may continue. There are no prerequisites for stabilization, let alone growth.

Russia: Farmers of Ingushetia Will Receive 550 Hectares of Abandoned Walnut Orchards (Feb 10)

The Ministry of Natural Resources of Ingushetia plans to transfer 550 hectares of abandoned walnut orchards to farmers. According to the Minister of Agriculture and Food of the Republic, about 34 hectares of abandoned gardens have been de veloped. The handover process is scheduled for the end of 2023.
