W7: Weekly Nut Update

Updated Feb 23, 2023
Tridge's global market analysts and country representatives take a deep dive into what happened during W7 in the global nut landscape including areca nut, cashew, peanut, pistachio, and walnut. In summary, in Vietnam, Chinese demand for areca has started since the beginning of February 2023, increasing the price of areca nuts. After China implemented a tariff-free policy for Sudanese peanuts, the import volume of this product is on the rise. In Spain, peanut plantations have accelerated their pace planting more than 4K new hectares each year. Lastly, in Hungary, the walnut 2022 harvest could exceed 15K tons, an increase of 140% compared to the average of the past five years.

Areca nut

Vietnam: The Market Is Open, Areca Nut Is Exported Abroad Again, Vietnam’s Nghe an Areca Farmers Are Happy About This (Feb 16)

At the end of 2022, the price of areca nut decreased to USD 0.13-0.17/kg (VND 3,000-4,000/kg), causing areca growers from Nghe An province to lose revenue. Chinese demand for areca has started since the beginning of February 2023, and the price of areca has tripled.

Cashew

China: Price of Vietnamese Cashew Nuts in the Chinese Market During W7 (Feb 17)

In W7, there was a decline in demand for tree nuts, and buyers based their purchases on actual demand in the Chinese market. The price of Premium Vietnam cashew nut WW320 stood at USD 7.85/kg (RMB 54/kg) (color type 1), including logistics and the invoice. Depending on the hue, breakage rate, and defect rate, the pricing for the lower grades ranged from USD 6.98-7.56/kg (RMB 48-52/kg).

Peanut

China: Tariff-Free Policy for Sudanese Peanuts in China (Feb 15)

Some sesame seed traders are now selling oil-related goods like peanuts in early 2023. Sudan and Senegal are the two primary supplying countries. The reason why importers do not trade peanuts from Southeast Asian countries is that the quality of the products is not as good as that of the two mainstream production areas. After China implemented a tariff-free policy for Sudanese peanuts, the import volume of this product is on the rise, which is worthy of attention.

Pistachio

Spain: The Spanish Pistachio Sector Hopes to Boost Its Production in the Next Five Years (Feb 15)

In Spain, the following five years will be decisive for the pistachio sector, with the entry into production of the vast majority of the surface occupied by pistachios. Plantations have accelerated their pace planting more than 4K new hectares each year. In 2015 Spain had 7.8K hectares, since then more than 51.7K hectares have been added, 86% of the entire surface.

Walnut

Hungary: The 2022 Walnut Harvest Exceeded 15K Tons (Feb 17)

The Hungarian walnut harvest in 2022 could exceed 15K tons, an increase of 140% compared to the average of the past five years. The foreign trade balance of shelled nuts in Hungary was positive, although shelled nut exports have decreased in recent years. The volume of walnut exports decreased by 3% to 461.9 tons, and the value increased to HUF 488.8M, an increase of 11% between January and November 2022 compared to the same period in 2022.
