W8: Weekly Nut Update

Updated Mar 2, 2023
Tridge's global market analysts and country representatives take a deep dive into what happened during W8 in the global nut landscape including almond, hazelnut, pistachio, and walnut. In summary, Morocco has experienced heavy rains and snowfalls that are detrimental to almond trees. In Tukey, the earthquake had little impact on the hazelnut kernel production areas and their factories, but pistachio production areas and their factories were impacted. In the last two months of the 2022/23 hazelnut export season, 56,763MT of hazelnuts were exported from Turkey with USD 315M. On the other hand, Iran exported 46K tons of pistachios from March 21, 2022, to January 20, 2023. Lastly, in Moldova, the minimum wholesale price for a walnut kernel increased by 13%, from USD 13.99-15.07/kg.

Almond

Morocco: The Cold Snap Affects Almond Crops (Feb 20)

Morocco has experienced heavy rains and snow falls that are detrimental to almond trees. Low temperatures during almond flowering can cause production loss for farmers. Almond trees bloom between January and February, making them vulnerable to cold temperatures.

Hazelnut

Turkey: Impact of Turkey Earthquake on Nut Production Areas (Feb 20)

The Turkish earthquake had little impact on the hazelnut kernel production areas and their factories, but pistachio production areas and their factories were impacted. It is estimated that the alternative production areas for pistachios are Iran and the United States.

Turkey: Recession in Europe Slowed Hazelnut Exports From Turkye in 2022/23 (Feb 24)

In the last two months of the 2022/23 hazelnut export season, 56,763MT of hazelnuts were exported from Turkye with USD 315M, which is a decrease of 18% in quantity and 30% in value compared to the same period of the previous year. The energy crisis and recession in European countries, the reduction of production and the cost increase of some companies or the complete stoppage of production, the lack of stock, and the reduction of orders by some of them harmed exports. It is predicted that this situation will continue until the end of the year in European countries, which are the largest markets for the hazelnut industry.

Pistachio

Iran: Over 46K Tons of Pistachios Exported by Iran in 10 Months (Feb )

The chairman of the Agriculture and Food Industries Committee of the Iran Chamber of Cooperatives reported that from March 21, 2022, to January 20, 2023, Iran exported 46K tons of pistachios.

Walnut

Moldova: After a Long Stagnation in Moldova, the Price of a Low-Quality Walnut Kernel Has Slightly Risen (Feb 22)

In Moldova, the minimum wholesale price for a walnut kernel increased by 13%, from USD 13.99-15.07/kg, of ordinary quality; a mixed variety, a medium-sized or slightly darkened varietal. The maximum price level for a high-quality is around USD 16.14/ kg.
