W9: Weekly Berry Update

Tridge's global market analysts and country representatives take a deep dive into what happened during W9 in the global blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry landscapes. In summary, in Peru, the Ica region exported 23.7K tons of blueberries in the 2022/23 campaign. In Serbia, preparation for the raspberry season has begun in plantations, raspberry growers expect USD 1301.61-1627.01/kg (KD 400-500) of red and gold raspberries in the 2023 season. In Spain, Huelva's 2022/23 strawberry campaign reported a significant decrease in the planting area of the Fortuna variety. Climate change in the southern hemisphere has caused difficulties for strawberry producers due to frost-interrupted fruit ripening. On the other hand, in Thailand, the price of imported Korean strawberries was stable. Lastly, in the United States, continuous rains in Central and Southern California have prompted the cancellation of all strawberry harvesting in the Oxnard and Santa Maria Districts.

Blueberry

Peru: Ica Exported 23.7K Tons of Blueberries in the 2022/23 Campaign (Mar 3)

The Association of Blueberry Producers of Peru (Proarándanos) reported the Ica region of Peru exported 23.7K tons of blueberries in the 2022/23 campaign, an increase of 45% compared to what was shipped in the previous campaign 2021/22.


Raspberry

Serbia: Raspberry Growers Want Advance Payments for the Purchase of Fruit (Feb 28)

In Serbia, preparation for the raspberry season has begun in plantations. Growers want to protect themselves and expect advance payments. In 2022, the purchase price reached USD 1952.42/kg (KD 600/kg).

Serbia: Growers Anticipate 2023 Purchase Prices for Raspberries (Mar 3)

Raspberry growers expect USD 1301.61-1627.01/kg (KD 400-500) of red and gold raspberries in the 2023 season, with a large stock of raspberries available for buyers. 

Strawberry

Spain: Fortuna Variety Continues to Be the Most Planted Strawberry Variety in Huelva, Spain (Feb 27)

The estimated variety composition of Huelva's 2022/23 strawberry campaign reported a significant decrease in the planting area of the Fortuna strawberry. Despite the decrease, this variety continues to be the most cultivated variety, with a 16.7% area in 2023, a drop of 15% compared to the previous season and 19.7% less than the 2020/21 campaign.  

Spain: Low Temperatures Hit Strawberry Plantations (Mar 2)

In Spain, climate change in the southern hemisphere has caused difficulties for strawberry producers due to frost-interrupted fruit ripening. The climatic conditions in 2022 were relatively good compared to previous seasons. As a result, the strawberries began to bloom earlier than planned. In mid-January, a cold front set in, and overnight temperatures prevented the fruit from ripening.

Thailand: Stable Prices of Korean Strawberries in the Thai Wholesale Market in W9 (Mar 1)

The price of imported Korean strawberries in Thailand in W9 was stable compared with W8. The minimum price of K-Strawberry stood at USD 5.69/250g (THB 200/250g). The maximum price of K-Strawberry stood at USD 8.54/250g (THB 300/250g).

United States: Strawberry Harvesting Canceled in Central and Southern California During W9 Due to Continuous Rains (Mar 1)

During W9, continuous rains in Central and Southern California have prompted the cancellation of all strawberry harvesting in the Oxnard and Santa Maria Districts. Fresh strawberries will continue to be shipped from Central Mexico, where the season has been extended due to weather issues in California.
