W9: Weekly Nut Update

Updated Mar 9, 2023
Tridge's global market analysts and country representatives take a deep dive into what happened during W9 in the global nut landscape including almond, areca nut, cashew, hazelnut, and walnut. In summary, in Spain, the price of almonds decreased due to a drop in demand. In Indonesia, the price of the areca nut remains at the lowest price level. In Chi, the price for Vietnamese cashew nuts (WW320, Grade A, color type-1) stood at USD 7.62/kg (RMB 53/kg) in the Shanghai market. In Vietnam, big-size grades of cashews such as WW180, WW210, and WW240 would likely be available for sale from March to June 2023. The overall supply of raw cashew nuts for the Vietnamese market seems stable in 2023. The Vietnam Cashew Association has set an export target of USD 3.1B in 2023. On the other hand, in China, there's an increase in hazelnuts price in the market. In Turkey, the selling price of Turkish hazelnut kernels for domestic sales in January-February 2023 was USD 8.69-8.98/kg (RMB 60-62/kg). Lastly, during the last week of February, the price of walnut kernels slightly increased for the first time in 2023.

Almond

Spain: Spanish Almond Prices Dropped in W9 Due to Low Demand (Mar 4)

The price of Spanish almonds decreased in W9 due to a drop in demand. The Guara variety dropped from USD 3.78/kg in W6 to USD 3.57/kg in W9. The Marcona variety decreased from USD 7.14/kg in W6 to USD 7.03/kg in W9, whereas the price of the Largeta variety declined from USD 5.27/kg to USD 5.17/kg, according to La Lonja de Reus.

Areca nut

Indonesia: The Areca Nut Price Continues at the Lowest Point During W9 (Mar 2)

In Indonesia, the price of the areca nut is still at the lowest price level in W9. The selling price of areca nuts has dropped dramatically to only 50% of the price points of 2 years ago. The restriction on areca nut imports in India, a market for more than 80% of Indonesian areca nuts, was the cause of this decline. Areca nuts from Indonesia are subject to very high import duties in India. Exporters are pessimistic that prices will improve this year. Moreover, based on the information they get from importers there, the areca production in India is expected to increase during the 2023's harvest period.

Cashew

China: Prices of Vietnamese Cashew Nuts in the Shanghai Market During W8 (Feb 27)

In W8, the price for Vietnamese cashew nuts (WW320, Grade A, color type-1) stood at USD 7.62/kg (RMB 53/kg) to the consumers in the Shanghai market. The production of local cashew nuts is limited in China, and the country is mainly relying on imports. Vietnam is one of the biggest cashew nut exporters to China. The current demand for cashew nuts is stable.

Vietnam: Big-Size Grade Vietnamese Cashew Kernel Will Be Available From March to June 2023 (Mar 3)

Big-size grades of Vietnamese cashews such as WW180, WW210, and WW240 would likely be available for sale from March to June 2023 as Cambodian and Vietnam RCN is being cracked. The FOB price for Vietnamese cashew kernel is relatively quoted as per below:

WW180: USD 3.65-3.7/lbs

WW210: USD 3.25-3.3/lbs

WW240: USD 2.75-2.8/lbs

Vietnam: Cashew Kernel Supply in Vietnam Seems Stable in 2023 (Mar 3)

The overall supply of raw cashew nuts for the Vietnamese market seems stable in 2023. The local crop is being harvested in 2023 with a higher yield than in 2022, along with incoming supply from Cambodia and other African origins like the Ivory Coast and Ghana. This sufficient supply of RCN might put some pressure on kernel prices, which predicts to not fluctuate in a wide range.

Vietnam: Cashew Industry Aims to Export 3.1B USD in 2023 (Mar 4)

The Vietnam Cashew Association (VINACAS) has set an export target of USD 3.1B in 2023, an increase of 0.6% compared to 2022.

Hazelnut

China: Increasing Hazelnut Kernel Prices in China During W9 (Mar 2)

In W9, there's an increase in hazelnuts price in the Chinese market. The current offers come from USD 8.83-9.41/kg (RMB 61-65/kg). The main reason for the change is the increasing sourcing cost from Turkey suppliers. Due to the new epidemic policy, it expects that demand in China will increase in 2023 compared to 2022.

Turkey: In W9, the Price of Turkish Hazelnut Kernels Increased Due to the Earthquake (Mar 1)

The price of Turkish hazelnut kernels was USD 7.97-8.26/kg (RMB 55-57/kg) at the beginning of 2022, around USD 8.55/kg (RMB 59/kg) before the Chinese New Year in November-December 2022. The price of Turkish hazelnut kernels was impacted by the earthquake in Turkey in February 2023. Prices of hazelnut kernel products have increased. The selling price of Turkish hazelnut kernels for domestic sales in January-February 2023 was USD 8.69-8.98/kg (RMB 60-62/kg). Due to insufficient supply in the market in the short term, the price will continue to increase.

Walnut

Moldova: The Price of the Walnut Kernel Has Risen (Mar 2)

During the last week of February, the price of walnut kernels slightly increased for the first time in 2023, at an average of USD 3.99-4.6/kg (RON 75-80/kg), an increase of 6% WoW.
