Pineapples are an industry that can bring sustainable income to farmers and they also contribute to Malaysia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as they are suitable for both the domestic and export markets. Although the country's pineapple crop is still small compared to bananas and durians, the government is encouraging farmers to grow pineapple on a larger scale to increase the country's export volume. Most of the pineapple varieties grown in Malaysia consist of three major groups: CAYENNE pineapple, SPANISH pineapple, and QUEEN pineapple.
